Though it may be better to have the right solution slowly, rather than the wrong solution quickly, it is important that the present situation is resolved and that clarity is achieved for the public, library staff and the Local Authority.
I thus welcome the announcement today by Andy Burnham MP, Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, that Sue Charteris has been appointed to carry out the local Inquiry into public library service in Wirral. As a former Chief Executive of the Merton Council, she is highly knowledgeable and experienced in matters relating to local government. It will be for her to decide how the Inquiry will be conducted.
Obviously there must be significant consultation will local people. I am assured that there will be a local hearing, which will give people the chance to present their views and concerns. I will certainly be meeting Ms Charteris.
I look forward to working with Ms Charteris and I sincerely hope that in the course of her Inquiry, the importance of local libraries and the key services they provide will be brought to the forefront.”
The Inquiry was announced on 3 April, following a sustained campaign by Ben Chapman MP, local community groups and others. It will investigate whether the Council’s decision, following its Strategic Asset Review, to close eleven libraries is consistent with the statutory duty to provide a “comprehensive and efficient” library service.
